SS Leviathan appreciation post

SS Leviathan was an Ocean Liner of the United States Line, originally built as the SS Vaterland for the Hamburg America Line. She was part of the large Imperator-class of ships built for the trans-atlantic route. She sailed as Vaterland only a few times before war broke out in Europe and she became stranded in New York for three years. After US entry into the conflict, she was taken by the US Government and became a troopship, renamed USS Leviathan.

After the war, she was taken to Newport News, where she was stripped, gutted, and redesigned for trans-atlantic passenger service, with new oil powered engines to boot. She would sail with success, though as the United States had prohibited alcohol, she had a hard time competing with her European peers because she could not carry or sell alcohol to her passengers. Eventually the law would relax and she would be able to sell “medicinal alcohol” to her passengers. Her band was always very well-regarded and her restaurants were some of the best-equipped at sea. After depression hit, the US Line fell under the IMM, who wanted to rid themselves of the Leviathan. However, the US Government was quick to stipulate that the Leviathan would sail. After refurbishment, she would sail just five more times, the last time of which she sailed with only half of her total capacity. In 1937 she was finally sold to the British Metal Industries Ltd for scrap. With her enormous capacity and high speed, she would have made a valuable troop transport during World War II. But, it was not to be, and the largest American merchant ship ever built met her end in the scrap yard instead.
